House of the Dragon Season 2 began filming in the United Kingdom in April before moving over to Spain in May, with the season supposedly expected to continue production until around the end of the year. Seasmoke’s only previous rider was Laenor Velaryon, who gave up the dragon when he slipped away from his life in Westeros and escaped to Essos. Vermax hatched from the egg that was given to Jacaerys when he was an infant in a stunt partially designed to show his status as a true-born Targaryen.

The dragon of the youngest player in the Dance of the Dragons, Stormcloud has not been described in any of the source material. Stormcloud is the dragon the flies Aegon III to safety after an attack on the ship carrying him and Viserys to the relative safety of Essos during the conflict. The Blue Queen is the nickname of Tessarion, a cobalt blue dragon with copper belly scales, claws, and crest. Tessarion is the dragon bonded to Daeron Targaryen, the Daring, the youngest son of Viserys I and Alicent Hightower. The new trailers ask fans to pick a side in the ongoing civil war between Green and Black Councils that are fighting for King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra, respectively. As each side believes theirs to be the rightful seat on the Iron Throne, the Green and Black trailers reflect those two perspectives in separate yet complementary halves of the same story.
What’s Wrong With King Viserys in House of the Dragon?
Vermax only hatched recently on Dragonstone and bonded with Jacaerys, and can be seen in the first season of House of the Dragon learning how to use his flames on a goat. However, after Addam of Hull and his host of Rivermen defeats the betrayers, Silverwing refuses to take part in the battle and only rides high up in the sky as Vermithor, Tessarion, and Seasmoke fight each other to their deaths. Silverwing eventually refuses to be ridden by any other dragon rider and becomes a wild dragon after the Dance. House of the Dragon Season 2 will bring back many key cast members from the first season - including one particularly unexpected return - along with some newcomers. However, one major absentee will come through Paddy Considine's King Viserys I Targaryen after his death last season. It appears House of the Dragon will likely run for four seasons, although the reduced episode count could see the story expand into Season 5.
Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later casts Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes
After Rhaena’s death, Dreamfyre bonded with Helaena Targaryen who started riding at the young age of 11. Called the Red Queen, Meleys is the slender red and pink dragon ridden by Rhaenys, the queen who never was. Previously ridden by Princess Alyssa Targaryen before she died during childbirth, Meleys was considered the fastest and most cunning dragon in Westeros in her prime. In the books, Aegon rides Sunfyre to the Battle of Rook’s rest where Ser Cristone Cole sets a trap for Rhaenys and her dragon Meleys. While Meleys and Sunfyre are locked in a duel, Aemond and Vhagar descend on them from above and Meleys and Rhaenys don’t survive while Sunfyre is left with a badly injured wing but he is still alive. Despite being injured and flightless, Sunfyre manages to kill all the men who try to kill him after the Blacks retake Rook’s Rest.

While Vermithor is nearly as large as Vhagar, staying for so long without a rider and battlefield experience turned him into less of a threat, and his age doesn’t help him much either. The second dragon we meet, in House of the Dragon‘s second episode, “The Rogue Prince,” Caraxes is known as the Blood Wyrm for his blood red scales. He is the dragon mount of Prince Daemon Targaryen, but he has been claimed by other riders before. He is one of the older dragons, and is a veteran of many conflicts, being ridden into battle by Aemon Targaryen during the Fourth Dornish War alongside King Jaehaerys and Prince Baelon, who rode Vermithor and Vhagar.
Aemond just wants to capture Lucerys and take out his eye, but his dragon has a mind of its own. After Arrax blazes Vhagar with dragonfire, the angered beast takes a bite out of Arrax. The youngest dragon on the list, hatched during the Dance of the Dragons itself, Morning is the companion of Rhaena Targaryen, daughter of Daemon and his eventual wife Laena Velaryon. Fittingly, Morning is the pale pink of the dawn, with black horns and a black crest. In addition to Martin who is co-creator and executive producer, House of the Dragon is co-created, showrun and exec produced by Ryan Condal.
Vermithor is one of the largest dragons to ever reside in Westeros with only Vhagar and Balerion besting him in size. Ser Harrold Westerling is a long-standing member of the Kingsguard, having begun his service under Jaehaerys’ rule. In Game of Thrones, the only time House Westerling popped up was when they surrendered their seat to Robb Stark. However, in the Song of Ice and Fire books, this house played a much more prominent role, with Robb marrying Jeyne Westerling rather than Talisa Maegyr, as he did in the series.
If you watched Game of Thrones you of course remember the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen, and her quest to take back the Iron Throne. From that period, House of the Dragon brings us back nearly 200 years to the time in Westerosi history when House Targaryen was at the height of its power. The series begins with the reign of King Viserys I, the fifth Targaryen ruler, the question of his succession, and the events that unfold after he names his daughter, Rhaenyra, heir — a title a woman had never assumed.

Meleys is one of the oldest and largest dragons present in Westeros, and it is believed that she may be the mother to several of the younger dragons mentioned or shown in House of the Dragon. In "Fire and Blood," the "Dance of the Dragons" is the name given to a brutal and devastating civil war that turns the Targaryen dynasty against itself. The war is sparked by a succession crisis following the death of King Viserys I. His intention is for his daughter Rhaenyra, the only surviving child of his first marriage, to succeed him on the throne. When he dies, however, his second wife, Alicent, and their eldest son, Aegon, claim the throne for their line, without even notifying Rhaenyra of her father's death. Yes, the series is a prequel with Ryan J. Condal (Rampage and Hercules) and Miguel Sapohnik (whom you may remember from Game of Thrones favorite episodes “Battle of the Bastards,”“Hardhome,” and more) at the helm. As a self-proclaimed geek with a deep love for this kind of genre title, he likens it to walking into Disneyland.
It’s Otto who encourages his daughter Alicent to get close to the king after the death of his wife Aemma, leading to Alicent and Viserys’ marriage and their son Aegon. Though, as a result of Otto’s behind-the-scenes machinations, Viserys dismisses Otto as his Hand. When House of the Dragon begins, Viserys I Targaryen is King of Westeros after a Great Council had voted for him to succeed his grandfather Jaehaerys.
The quality and reception to the show is almost surprising -- Game of Thrones itself has a complicated legacy. We got some answers about House of the Dragon's scope early in the season when it was renewed for a second season, revealing it'd take more than 10 episodes to tell the tale of the Targaryen civil war. The pitch-black, green-eyed Cannibal earns his name by feasting on dead dragons, dragon eggs, and young dragons indiscriminately. Cannibal is the most antagonistic dragon, both to human riders and to his fellow dragons, frequently killing and attacking for little provocation. Cannibal is the oldest of the wild dragons, and is believed by the small folk to actually predate the arrival of the Targaryens to Dragonstone; that might explain his antagonistic relationship with his fellow dragons. Almost 100 years old at the outbreak of the Dance of the Dragons, Vermithor is a bronze dragon with tan wings.
